Charlie has never felt fully human.
He can’t remember his life before crawling from a hole in a Georgia state forest, and has been haunted ever since by the many-eyed Angel of Death. When his best friend is assaulted, Charlie uses his connection with Death to kill her abuser, but a reckless hex can have deadly consequences. The dead man’s corpse returns from the grave, Charlie’s best friend is killed and an ancient death goddess is freed to inhabit her body.
In order to undo the damage he’s caused, Charlie travels to a mountaintop cult to learn the rituals needed to expel the goddess from her new vessel and face his forgotten traumas. He’s helped by Lenora, a trans woman and practicing witch, and her girlfriend, an ex-psychopomp on the run from her duties in the Underworld.
The three gamble Charlie’s soul to reach the gates of Hell and discover that he’s closer to being a monster than ever being human again. Charlie must evolve into something truly malevolent to stop a vengeful goddess from regaining power and to prevent a bloody civil war in the Underworld.
